Allstate full coverage car insurance averages $3,159 per year, or $263 per month — $581 above the national average of $2,578. It’s one of the more expensive major insurers, but its wide agent network, strong claims support, and discount program make it a competitive choice for the right driver. Bundling home and auto alone saves an average of 25%, which can bring the effective cost much closer to what competitors charge.

What you actually pay depends on far more than the national average. Your city, driving record, age, vehicle, credit score, and the discounts you qualify for all play a role — and together they can push your rate well above or below the figures in this article. A driver in Columbus, Ohio pays $2,251 per year for full coverage with Allstate. The same profile in Las Vegas pays $6,006. That nearly $3,800 gap is driven by location alone — add in a recent accident, a younger driver, or a high-value vehicle and the range widens further.

💡 Your actual Allstate rate will likely differ from the averages here — and shopping around is the only way to know if it’s competitive

Your specific quote depends on your age, driving history, credit score, vehicle, zip code, and the discounts you qualify for — all of which can move your rate significantly in either direction. Before committing to Allstate, get quotes from at least three other carriers with the same coverage levels. The carrier that’s cheapest nationally may not be cheapest for your specific profile, and the only way to find out is to compare real numbers.

How much does Allstate car insurance cost?

Allstate’s average annual cost for full coverage is $3,159 — $581 more than the national average of $2,578. State minimum and liability-only policies are considerably cheaper, but they leave your own vehicle unprotected. Experts generally recommend full coverage with at least 100/300/100 limits for meaningful protection.

Here’s how Allstate average car insurance rates vary by coverage type.

Coverage typeAverage six-month costAverage monthly costAverage annual cost
Full coverage$1,580$263$3,159
State minimum$473$79$946
Liability only$530$88$1,059

💡 Liability-only coverage is cheaper, but it leaves a significant gap in protection

A liability-only policy pays for damage you cause to others — it provides nothing for your own vehicle if you’re in an at-fault accident, regardless of how much the repairs cost. The jump from $1,059 (liability only) to $3,159 (full coverage) buys you collision and comprehensive protection. For any car worth more than a few thousand dollars, that gap is worth covering. If you’re on the fence, check your car’s actual cash value on Kelley Blue Book before deciding.

The 10 most expensive states for Allstate car insurance

Florida, Washington D.C., and Delaware are Allstate’s three most expensive markets — all averaging over $4,800 per year for full coverage. High accident rates, litigation-prone legal environments, severe weather risk, and dense traffic all contribute to elevated premiums in these states.

The table below shows the most expensive states for Allstate full coverage.

💡 If you live in a high-cost state, shopping around is even more important than it is elsewhere

In Florida, Allstate’s average of $5,064 compares to State Farm at $2,758 and GEICO at $2,974 for similar coverage. That’s a difference of over $2,000 per year from the same insurer market. The most expensive states for Allstate aren’t necessarily the most expensive for all insurers — some competitors price Florida and Texas more aggressively. Getting at least three quotes in a high-cost state takes 30 minutes and can produce significant savings.

Our agents make it hassle-free to get the right quote.

💡 Urban vs suburban rates within the same state can differ by hundreds of dollars

Allstate charges $5,434 in Los Angeles but considerably less in San Diego and San Jose. If you’re moving between cities in the same state, it’s worth getting a new quote rather than assuming your rate transfers unchanged. Zip code is one of the most significant pricing factors in car insurance, and the difference between a dense urban area and a nearby suburb can be substantial.

How does Allstate compare to other major insurers?

Allstate’s full coverage average of $3,159 makes it one of the more expensive major insurers — only Farmers is higher among the carriers compared below. USAA, Travelers, and Erie Insurance are significantly cheaper, though USAA is only available to military families.

💡 The cheapest insurer for someone else may not be the cheapest for you — here’s why it’s worth shopping around

These averages are a useful starting point, but insurers weigh factors like driving history, credit score, vehicle type, and location very differently from one another. A driver with a recent accident might find State Farm far more forgiving than GEICO, while a young driver in Florida might find the opposite.

The only reliable way to know which insurer is actually cheapest for your specific profile is to get quotes from at least three carriers with identical coverage levels and compare the real numbers side by side. The table above shows where to start — but your own quotes are what actually matter.

What factors affect the cost of Allstate car insurance?

Allstate uses the same core rating factors as most major insurers, but the weight it assigns to each one influences where its rates land relative to competitors.

  • Your vehicle. Newer, more expensive, and higher-performance vehicles cost more to insure. Vehicles with advanced safety technology may qualify for discounts, but their repair costs can push premiums higher after an accident.
  • Driving history. A clean record typically produces Allstate’s most competitive rates. At-fault accidents, speeding tickets, and DUIs all increase premiums significantly and stay on your record for three to five years.
  • How much you drive. Higher annual mileage means more time on the road and more exposure to accidents. Drivers who commute long distances typically pay more than those who work from home or drive infrequently.
  • Your age. Teen drivers pay significantly more due to higher accident rates. Rates typically decline through your 30s and 40s before rising again slightly in older age.
  • Coverage type and limits. Choosing full coverage with higher liability limits costs more than state minimum, but provides substantially more protection. Options like roadside assistance and rental reimbursement add further to the premium.
  • Your location. State, city, and even zip code influence your rate based on local accident rates, weather risk, repair costs, and the legal environment.
  • Credit history. In most states, Allstate uses credit-based insurance scores as a rating factor. Drivers with stronger credit typically pay less.

What discounts does Allstate offer?

Allstate’s discount program is one of the more extensive among major insurers. Taking advantage of multiple discounts can bring its higher base rate closer to competitive levels.

  • Bundling discount. Combining home and auto policies with Allstate saves an average of 25%. This is one of the most reliable ways to offset Allstate’s higher base premium if you also need homeowners or renters coverage.
  • Safe driving club. Maintaining a clean driving record over time earns ongoing discounts. Allstate also offers a discount for completing an approved defensive driving course.
  • Drivewise. Allstate’s telematics program tracks driving behavior via an app and rewards safe habits with discounts. Low-mileage, smooth braking, and avoiding late-night driving all contribute to a better score.
  • Smart student discount. Students with a GPA of 2.7 or above qualify for this discount — useful for parents adding teen drivers to a policy.
  • New car discount. First-time owners of a brand-new vehicle may qualify for a discount.
  • Early renewal discount. Renewing before your current term expires earns a discount.
  • Pay-in-full discount. Paying your annual premium upfront rather than in installments typically saves on fees.
  • Anti-theft and safety features. Vehicle alarms, kill switches, antilock brakes, and collision-avoidance systems can each earn modest discounts.
  • Allstate eSmart. Opting for paperless billing and online policy documents earns a small discount.

💡 Allstate’s Drivewise program can be genuinely valuable for low-mileage or careful drivers

Unlike some telematics programs that only reward you at renewal, Drivewise offers an initial discount just for enrolling and tracks a range of behaviors beyond just speeding. If you drive fewer than 10,000 miles per year, avoid late-night driving, and brake smoothly, the combined savings can be meaningful. It’s worth enrolling even if you’re skeptical — you can always opt out if the monitoring feels intrusive, and you keep any discount earned during the participation period.

How to get a quote from Allstate

Allstate offers three ways to get a quote, each suited to different preferences.

Online

Visit Allstate.com and click Get a Quote on the homepage. Select auto insurance, enter your personal information and vehicle details, answer questions about your coverage preferences, and Allstate will provide an estimated rate. The online process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes.

By phone

Call Allstate customer service at (866) 977-0264. Have your driver’s license and vehicle identification number (VIN) ready. An agent will walk through your coverage options and provide a quote.

Through a local agent

Use the agent locator on Allstate’s website to find an agent near you. Meeting with an agent is useful if your situation is more complex — multiple vehicles, prior claims, or coverage needs that benefit from a more detailed conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Allstate expensive compared to other insurers?

Allstate is one of the more expensive major insurers for car insurance, averaging $3,159 per year for full coverage compared to a national average of $2,578. Among major carriers, only Farmers averages higher. GEICO, Travelers, Erie, and USAA all average significantly less. That said, Allstate’s discount program — particularly the 25% bundling discount — can narrow the gap considerably for drivers who also carry homeowners or renters coverage.

Why is Allstate more expensive than other insurers?

Allstate’s higher premiums reflect a combination of factors: its broader agent network (which adds distribution costs), its investment in claim handling and customer service, and its pricing model, which tends to load more cost onto higher-risk profiles. Drivers with clean records and multiple policies to bundle are better positioned to find Allstate competitive. Drivers with recent violations or limited bundling options will typically find better rates elsewhere.

Does Allstate offer discounts for safe driving?

Allstate offers multiple safe driving discounts. The safe driving club rewards a clean record over time. The Drivewise telematics program offers discounts for enrolling and for demonstrating safe driving habits through the app. A defensive driving course discount is also available in most states. Together, these discounts can meaningfully reduce premiums for drivers who qualify.

How do I lower my Allstate car insurance rate?

The most effective approaches are bundling your home and auto policies (average saving of 25%), enrolling in Drivewise if you’re a careful or low-mileage driver, maintaining a clean driving record, and improving your credit score if it has room to grow. Raising your deductible from $500 to $1,000 also typically reduces your premium by around 11%. If none of these options bring Allstate’s rate to a competitive level, comparing quotes from other carriers at renewal is the most reliable path to a lower premium.

Is Allstate a good insurance company?

Allstate scores 3.57 out of 5 in our customer satisfaction survey, with 83% of customers satisfied with its service and 93% saying they plan to renew. Those renewal numbers are notably high for an above-average-cost insurer and suggest most customers find the service worth the premium. Allstate is well established, financially stable, and offers a wide range of coverage options and add-ons. Whether it’s the right choice depends on whether its rates are competitive in your state and whether you qualify for enough discounts to justify the higher base cost.

Methodology

In 2026, Insure.com commissioned Quadrant Information Systems to analyze car insurance rates for 40-year-old male and female drivers with a clean driving record and a good insurance score. The sample profile includes full coverage with 100/300/100 liability limits and a $500 deductible for collision and comprehensive, based on a Honda Accord LX driven 12 miles daily and 10,000 miles annually.

The analysis includes quotes from 51 states, 29,159 cities and 34,595 ZIP codes, covering 195 insurance companies across 73 insurer groups and more than 65 million quotes. The national average premium of $2,578 per year is based on this analysis and is used for comparison throughout the report.
