Esurance, a pioneer in online insurance, traces its roots to 1999. That's when five entrepreneurs saw a need for a direct-to-consumer online insurance company and opened their first office in San Francisco's "Dogpatch" district.
They sold their first policy in December of that year to Judith Jeschke of Forest Park, Ill., for her 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix SE.
Esurance has grown from offering policies in five states to all 50 states and from having five associates to more than 2,000.
In 2000, Folksamerica Holding Company, Inc., a subsidiary of White Mountain Insurance Group, acquired Esurance from its founding partners.
In May 2011, Allstate announced it would acquire Esurance from White Mountain and the deal was completed later that year.
The company's headquarters remain in San Francisco where it was founded.
Esurance was among the first automobile insurance companies to offer discounts to same-sex partners. It also offers discounts for starting your quote online and for paying premiums in full.
Esurance also offers motorcycle insurance and collector car insurance.
