In 1972, the commerce insurance Company, a subsidiary of the Commerce Group, Inc, was founded to provide independent agents access to a company focused on agents and their customers’ personal lines insurance needs. Providing insurance in Massachusetts and New Jersey, the Commerce Insurance Company writes nearly $1.6 billion in premiums and employs more than 1,800 people. The company offers personal, commercial property and casualty continuance with the tag line “Caring in everything we do.”
In April 2007, Commerce entered the New York personal lines insurance market through its acquisition of SWICO Enterprises, Ltd., the holding company for Hempstead, a New York-based property and casualty insurer Statewide Insurance Company. State-Wide Insurance Company primarily writes private passenger automobile insurance in the state of New York.
In June 2008, Commerce Group, Inc. was acquired by Mapfre S.A. Mapfre is the largest insurance group in Latin America and has a presence in 43 countries, with about 51,000 agents worldwide.
The Commerce Insurance Company offers a variety of car insurance coverages to its customers. These options vary by state, but combine to include collision, comprehensive, bodily injury liability, property damage liability and medical payment insurance. In order to provide affordable protection, the company also offers discounts such as safe drivers plans, homeowner/auto combination and group discounts.
