Bundling with Erie vs. buying from two different companies

The following table shows the cost of having separate policies with Erie plus another carrier for either your home or auto insurance and whether you’ll save if you bundle.

“Bundling with the major insurers does offer a discount for both the home and auto insurance. However, many companies that offer auto as their primary offer a bundle through a different insurer that may not have competitive rates for homeowners. Their auto insurance rates may be very good, but the homeowner’s insurance rates are well out of line with other well-known companies. You shouldn’t just look at how much you are saving on one policy,” says David Lervig, found of the Insurance School of Texas.

In almost all cases, bundling both home and auto insurance gets you a discount with Erie.

The only scenario we considered where bundling isn’t cheaper is when you buy a separate auto policy with Erie and a home policy with Allstate.

Methodology

Insure.com commissioned home and auto insurance rates for major carriers from Quadrant Data Services in late 2023. Home insurance rates are based on $300,000 in dwelling and liability coverage and a $1,000 deductible. Auto insurance rates are based on a full coverage policy with 100/300/100 liability limits and $500 deductibles, using the sample profile of a 40-year-old male driving a 2023 Honda Accord LX with a clean driving record and good credit. Quadrant also provided average bundling discounts.
