It's not fair that some insurance companies are covering Viagra, but my company doesn't cover prescription contraceptives.
It's true that many insurers started covering Viagra after men began scrambling for this impotency "wonder drug," and yet they don't cover contraceptives. But there's been a movement afoot to make it an equal playing field.
Several states have enacted laws requiring insurance companies to cover the costs of certain prescription contraceptives under certain conditions (there are still many loopholes, such as exempting some "religious" employers and insurers or those that object on "moral grounds"). Other states are still addressing the controversial issue. Opponents of these laws, known as "pill bills," say they will drive up the cost of health insurance.
To see if your state is among those that have enacted laws, read Pill bills: States that mandate contraceptive equality.
